The Chinese Cultural Perspective

Writing papers on behalf of others can be challenging. Cross-cultural differences may arise, and some issues may be sensitive. ST clients are international, Chinese-speaking students who may not fully relate to or understand western cultural values and perspectives. Our purpose as writers is to consider ourselves from the client’s perspective. In doing so, we can help them better understand how to express themselves in English.

While many of you may have never experienced Chinese culture directly, it is important to consider the following in your writing:

  • Our clients are young Chinese 20-somethings who travel to the West for the purpose of studying. Some have been here since middle or high school, but many do not arrive until they reach the university level.
  • Western euphemisms, idioms and expressions might be neither comprehensible nor appropriate for our clients. Plainspoken and precise language should be used.
  • Chinese culture is very conservative. Progressive western views are often counter to Chinese values. Filial piety, harmony, and security are held in higher regard than individualism, self-expression, and freedom.
  • On orders related to Chinese governmental policies, please do not be over-critical, as these views may be controversial and offensive.

Our main purpose at ST is to help our clients learn how to express themselves using western writing conventions and the English language. When in doubt, ask clients about their perspectives to help them find their own voice.
